Reds Recap: West Coast Meltdown

Reds get clobbered in the Wild Wild West.

Our trip to San Diego was marred by awful traffic and bad luck, but I will do anything to go back. After a grueling drive we arrived at Coronado Island, a fantastically beautiful place which boasts a high-quality brewpub. If you’ve never been to Coronado Island, do a Google image search. Hell, plan a vacation there before it’s swallowed by the Pacific.

While I could dismiss a sweep by the Dodgers as growing pains, getting knocked about by the fucking Padres is just embarrassing. Nothing will teach you humility like being heckled by a Padres fan.

It felt like the premise of the infamous Chuuch tweet:

Now, The Dodgers have come and gone from Cincinnati, doling out another sweep to the Reds, who are now on a nine game losing streak. Any realistic hopes of contention are dashed, barring tremendous returns from the lost trio of Bailey, DeSclafani, and Finnegan. There is hope for this team in the future. The Reds front office has made great decisions and the foundation of this club is forming. This team has a strong offense with other talented potential on the farm, and I believe the turmoil in the rotation will find balance. If there is any cure for the crippling pessimism that grips every Cincinnati sports fan, it is eternal hopefulness. Be a believer, not some no-nothing asshole that calls into sports talk shows to complain.

I’m at home, in my little office, thinking about California. I went to reacquaint myself with old friends and to catch a couple ballgames, and it was a great time but for the baseball. Someday, if I find sanity or perspective in life, I’ll forget about Corey Seager’s grand slam practically (metaphorically) landing in my lap, or the foul taste of Dodger Dogs. I’ll forget the shame of being laughed at by Padres fans. Maybe I won’t remember that every LA sidewalk is covered in filth and shit. Maybe, if we’re lucky, the Pacific will swallow California and it will fade from our collective memory. But, it is worth remembering that baseball is best enjoyed with friends.
