Bengals: 3 Positives and 1000 Negatives after Week 7

Alright not that many negatives, but there’s a lot.

What the fuck did I just watch?

Was that SNF, or a boxing match where one guy slowly tortured his opponent before knocking him out?

Sunday night was a shit-show. We played horrible, and that’s about the long and short of it.

Let’s dive in:

Negatives

Where do I begin?

Normally, I’ll take 3 negatives from the game and break those down and talk about them. Well, today we’re changing it up a little.

There were a shit-ton of negatives, so I’m going to bring those all up, briefly talk about them, and then we’re going to take a chug of alcohol and move on. I don’t want to relive last night.

Oh god, where do I even start?..

Well, once again our defense didn’t show up. I wasn’t expecting a good defense performance, as the Chiefs have destroyed everybody. But it was miserable. I think the Bengals forgot how to tackle.

They probably forgot what a tackle even is:

You knew it was going to be a long game when we had Shawn Williams in man coverage with Tyreek Hill.

Teryl Austin, why do we have our worst coverage guy in the secondary in man coverage with Tyreek? I swear… the play calling gets worse every week.

Now, I could go off and rant about this secondary, but that’d just be petty. The Chiefs were just simply too much to handle.

The defensive line got no pressure on Mahomes. We had 2 sacks the whole game. That’s not enough. You can’t expect the secondary to cover that long. Giving Mahomes all day is not ideal and proved to allow him to do whatever the hell he wanted.

Also, our linebackers sucked. Burfict is struggling this year, and Preston Brown has taken a step back since joining the team.

The offense….. was shit. The Chiefs have the worst defense in the league, and we score 10 frickin’ points. 10 points? Are you shitting me?

There’s a lot to blame for this. The right side of the line was miserable, nobody bothered trying to get open, Andy Dalton went back to 2014 Primetime mode, and most importantly: the coaching was awful. Lazor, for whatever reason, can’t get Mixon involved. The game-plan and play-calling have been horrid.

16 years later, Marvin Lewis has yet to change.  You can make whatever excuse you want, but it comes down to coaching. Marvin Lewis simply did not have this team prepared. We all laughed when Marvin told us to expect change, because it’s the same routine every year.

Alright, take another chug and let’s move on.

Positives (yes, somehow)

AJ Green

If there was one person who wanted to win, it was AJ Green. He played great. At one point in the game, Green had 110 receiving yards when Andy Dalton had 111 passing yards. Green was huge for us early in the game.

Unfortunately, we went full Marvin and made no halftime adjustments, and we failed to utilize Green in the 2nd half. But that’s not on Green.

Cordy Glenn

Glenn had a good start to year, then struggled a ton for about 2 games. Well, he’s been playing really well lately. He’s been playing like the left tackle we expected when we traded for him.

William Jackson

Damn, WJ3 is good.

WJ3 (William Jackson the 3rd) had a rough start to the season, but he’s back to himself.

Last week, he didn’t allow a catch.
Sunday night, he allowed one catch.

Whoever he was against, he was locking him up. When Tyreek Hill wasn’t toasting us, it was likely that WJ3 was in coverage against him. Can’t ask WJ3 to do more.

Question

How will the Bengals respond?

The Bengals have the Buccaneers next week. They will face off against Jamies Winston, who likes to eat crab legs and grab Uber drivers inappropriately.

The Buccaneers won’t be a cakewalk. They have solid offensive weapons such as Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson, CJ Goodwin, and OJ Howard. Their defense on the other hand, not so good. This is a great chance for the Bengals offense to rebound. We should have done well against the Chiefs terrible defense, but we are being given a golden opportunity to have a great rebound game.

Although, we don’t always respond well after a tough loss (losing to the Chiefs is an example of that). So how we respond after 2 bad losses will show a lot about this team. If we can respond well and come out with a win, then playoff hopes are still high. However, if we lose, then this season is heading in the wrong direction fast.
