It happened…..

After 9 miserable games….

Teryl Austin has been fired.

Hell yes.

It’s about time.

This needed to happen. You can make any excuse you want, but this was the right move. The Bengals have given up 500+ yards in the last 3 games, and have given up total points of 45, 34, and 51.

We are currently projected to be the WORST DEFENSE in NFL history. A change had to happen.

Austin’s defense was too reliant on turnovers. When we couldn’t get turnovers, we’d get destroyed. Looking bad – the sad thing is, even when we perfected the scheme, we STILL got killed. Remember against the Buccaneers? We had 4 turnovers and still gave up 34 points and over 500 yards. Clearly, Teryl Austin wasn’t working out.

So who’s taking over?

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

You know what? Screw it, I’ll allow it.

Why? Well, a couple of reasons.

To start, Marvin Lewis was the BEST defensive coordinator during his tenure as a DC. He has a great defensive mind, and even more importantly we do not currently have a great option among our positions coaching.

We could have promoted Jim Haslett, because he has experience as a defensive coordinator. Okay… experience as a failed defensive coordinator. Our linebackers suck, and there’s been a trend of linebackers getting worse here since Haslett has taken over as the linebacker coach.

So.. there’s no great option in our building. Marvin taking over is the “best” choice. We’ll still have to hire a new defensive coordinator at the end of the year, but it won’t be a case of simply promoting a positions coach who was the intern. We will snag an actual defensive coordinator (well, hopefully).

Long story short – Teryl Austin is gone, and we all can celebrate! Maybe we won’t be the worst defense of all time!
